ST. ANGELA ACADEMY IN AIKEN, SC

St. Angela Academy has been housed at three locations in Aiken, SC. The first school was established in 1900 by the Ursuline Sisters and was located at Richland and Pendleton Streets. This school was previously named the Palmetto Outdoor School. In 1912, St. Angela Academy moved to the former Magnolia Inn, at 820 York Street. This structure evoloved into a residence for the Sisters and their students, and an adjacent frame structure was used for classes. In the 1950s, with an increase in population due to the establishment of the Savannah River Project, St. Angela Academy was moved to the Berrie Road facility. The residence is named Ridgeley Hall (1928), and a brick and steel school building was constructed just to the east. It was demolished in February 1999.

Here is a good view of the York Street buildings. The residence is on the left, and the class building is on the right. It was demolished to make room for the brick school building which now houses St. Mary Help of Christians.

Here is a 1938 photograph of the residence.

An undated photograph of the residence and some students and faculty.
